Psalms 23:1 (KJV)

David wrote this psalm from experience—he was a shepherd before he was a king. He knew what sheep needed: food, water, protection, guidance. He also knew how helpless sheep are without a shepherd. When David writes 'The LORD is my shepherd,' he's not being poetic—he's being literal. God provides for him the way he once provided for his flock.

The most famous psalm begins with the most comforting claim: I have a Shepherd. Not 'the LORD is a shepherd' in some abstract sense, but MY shepherd. Personal. Present. Attentive. And because I have a Shepherd who owns the cattle on a thousand hills, I shall not want. Not 'I might not want' or 'I hope not to want.' I SHALL not want. It's a settled fact. Sheep with a good shepherd don't lack for anything essential.
