Who Wrote This, When, and Why It Mattered
Jesus spoke these words the night before His crucifixion, in the upper room with His disciples. Thomas had just asked, 'We don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way?' Jesus' answer wasn't a philosophical dissertation. It was Himself. 'I am the way.' This is one of seven 'I am' statements in John's Gospel, all of them claiming divinity. It's the answer to Thomas's question and to every human's deepest need: the way to God is through knowing Jesus.
Reflection
A Devotional Reflection
Jesus didn't say 'I'll show you the way.' He said 'I AM the way.' Not a map to follow, but a person to trust. Not a philosophy to study, but a life to live in union with. This is the most exclusive claim Jesus ever made—and it's divisive on purpose. There aren't many paths to God. There's one. And His name is Jesus. That sounds narrow until you realize the way is a person who loves you enough to die for you. It's not narrow—it's personal.
