Historical Context
Who Wrote This, When, and Why It Mattered
John wrote this Gospel around 90 AD, decades after the other Gospels. He's writing to a Greek-speaking audience familiar with philosophy. The term 'Logos' (Word) was well-known in Greek thought—it meant reason, order, divine wisdom. John takes that concept and declares: that eternal Logos you've been philosophizing about? He has a name. Jesus. And He became flesh and lived among us. It's a brilliant bridge between Greek thought and Hebrew revelation.
Reflection
A Devotional Reflection
John opens his Gospel with the same three words that open Genesis: 'In the beginning.' But Genesis tells us what God created. John tells us who God is. The Word (Jesus) was already there in the beginning, with God, as God. This is the doctrine of the Trinity in a single sentence: Jesus is distinct from the Father (with God) and yet fully divine (was God). Before creation, before time, Jesus existed. Everything you see exists because of Him.

How to Carry This Verse Through Your Day
When you read the Bible, you're not just reading ancient texts. You're encountering the living Word who existed before time began. Jesus is the Word made flesh. Every word of Scripture points to Him. When life feels chaotic and meaningless, remember: the Word who spoke order into chaos at creation is the same Word speaking order into your life today. He is reason. He is truth. He is the beginning and the end.
