Ephesians 2:7Ephesians 2:9

Historical Context

Who Wrote This, When, and Why It Mattered

Paul wrote Ephesians from prison around 60 AD. In the verses before this (2:1-7), he describes what we were: dead in sin, following the course of this world, deserving wrath. Then comes verse 8: 'But God, being rich in mercy... saved us by grace.' It's the great reversal. We were dead; God made us alive. We deserved wrath; God gave us grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 is the clearest statement of salvation by grace through faith in the entire Bible.

Reflection

A Devotional Reflection

This is the gospel in a single sentence: salvation is a gift. Not a reward for good behavior. Not a prize for trying hard. A gift. You can't earn it, and you can't pay for it. Grace means you get what you don't deserve. Faith means you receive the gift with open hands instead of closed fists trying to earn it. And lest you start to feel proud about your faith, Paul clarifies: even the faith to believe is a gift. It's grace all the way down.

How to Carry This Verse Through Your Day

Are you trying to earn God's approval? Stop. You can't. That's the bad news and the good news. The bad news: your best efforts aren't enough. The good news: they don't have to be. Jesus paid it all. Salvation is a gift. Open your hands, stop striving, and receive it. Then live out of gratitude, not guilt. You're saved by grace—now live in the freedom that grace brings.
