Prayer for Grief

Jesus wept.

John 11:35 (KJV)

Grief is perhaps the most honest prayer we ever pray. Whether you've lost someone dear, faced an unexpected ending, or are walking through seasons of deep sorrow, this prayer is for you. Grief doesn't mean you lack faith—it means you loved deeply. This prayer invites you to bring your raw, unfiltered heartache to God, who promises not to fix it quickly, but to meet you faithfully in the midst of it.

A daily KJV verse, delivered as a text message every morning. No app to open.

The Prayer

Father, my heart is heavy with loss, and I come before You with tears I cannot hold back. The absence feels unbearable, and some days I question whether the pain will ever soften. Yet in this darkness, I reach for You, because You are the God who sees every sorrow and knows the depths of my grief. Help me to believe—truly believe—that You are near to the brokenhearted. When my faith falters, sustain it. When I am tempted to despair, remind me that You do not leave the grieving orphaned. Let me feel Your presence, not as a distant comfort, but as a Father who grieves with me. Give me grace to remember the one I have lost without being consumed by what is gone. Help me to treasure the memories while trusting that their life mattered and still matters in Your kingdom. Teach me to hope again—not to forget, but to live forward knowing that You hold both the living and the dead in Your eternal hands. Comfort those who mourn with me. Bind up our wounds together. And in Your time, O God, transform this grief into something redemptive—a deeper faith, a gentler heart, a life more rooted in what is eternal. Until then, I will hold to You. In Jesus's name, Amen.

Amen.
How to Use This Prayer

Pray this when you're struggling with loss—in the morning when the weight hits fresh, in the evening when silence amplifies your sorrow, or whenever you need permission to grieve fully. You might pray it aloud, write it out, or simply sit with these words and let them speak for your heart.

Reflection

The shortest verse in Scripture carries one of the deepest truths: God grieves. When Jesus wept at Lazarus's tomb, He didn't remain detached or clinical. He entered into human sorrow fully, authentically. This tells us everything we need to know—that grief is not a failure of faith, but a reflection of love, and that God honors our tears. Your sorrow matters to Him. He is not asking you to "get over it" quickly or to paste on false joy. Instead, He invites you into His presence with your honest pain, where you will find not immediate healing, but the companionship of a God who understands loss more deeply than anyone. Bring your grief to Him as it is.
