PrayerFor Your Heart

Prayer for Forgiveness

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9 (KJV)

Guilt and shame can weigh heavily on the soul, whether you're wrestling with something you've done or struggling to forgive yourself for past mistakes. If you feel distant from God, trapped by regret, or unable to move forward, this prayer invites you into the deep well of God's mercy. Forgiveness isn't about minimizing what happened—it's about encountering the grace that transforms us and sets us free.

A daily KJV verse, delivered as a text message every morning. No app to open.

The Prayer

O God, I come before Thee with a broken heart, burdened by wrongs I have done and words I cannot take back. I have grieved Thee, and I have wounded others, and the weight of my transgressions presses upon my soul. I do not come to excuse myself or to minimize what I have done—I come only to confess and to plead for Thy mercy. Forgive me, Lord. Wash away my sins with the blood of Christ, who bore my guilt upon the cross. Create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me. Help me to turn from the paths that have led me astray, and give me grace to walk in newness of life. But Lord, I also lay before Thee those who have wounded me. Soften my heart toward them as Thou hast softened Thy heart toward me. Give me the strength to forgive as I have been forgiven, to extend mercy as I have received it. Break the chains of bitterness that bind me, and fill the empty spaces with Thy love. Help me to believe that my past does not define my future, that Thy grace is sufficient for all my failings. Let me walk in the freedom of Thy forgiveness, and let that freedom flow through me to others. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Amen.
How to Use This Prayer

Pray this prayer when guilt is holding you back from intimacy with God, or when unforgiveness toward yourself or others is stealing your peace. Return to it whenever you need to reset your heart and remember the depth of God's mercy.

Reflection

Forgiveness is the hinge upon which our entire spiritual life turns. When we confess—not excuse, not justify, but truly confess—we open ourselves to God's faithfulness. He doesn't forgive because we deserve it or because we've punished ourselves enough. He forgives because He is just and loving, and because Christ paid the debt we could never pay. The miracle is that confession leads not to condemnation but to cleansing. When you pray for forgiveness, you're not groveling before an angry judge; you're running toward a Father who has been waiting to restore you. And as you experience that restoration, you'll find the power to extend the same grace to others.
