Prayer for Depression

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Psalms 55:22 (KJV)

Depression is a heavy cloak that dims the world around you, making even small tasks feel impossible and your faith feel distant. If you're walking through this valley—where sadness has become a weight you carry every moment—this prayer is for you. It's a prayer for those who feel forgotten, overwhelmed, and spiritually empty. Pray it when darkness feels absolute, or simply when you need God to meet you in the pain you're experiencing.

The Prayer

Father, I come to You in the weight of this darkness that presses upon my soul. Depression has wrapped itself around my heart, and I cannot seem to find my way back to the light. I confess that I am weary—weary in body, weary in spirit. My thoughts condemn me; my circumstances overwhelm me. Yet I have nowhere else to turn but to You. Lord, You have promised never to leave nor forsake me, and I cling to that promise even when I cannot feel Your presence. Lift this heavy fog from my mind. Heal the broken places within me that I cannot fix myself. Grant me the strength to take each day one breath at a time, one moment at a time, knowing that You are with me in the darkness just as You are in the light. Surround me with Your tender mercy. Send your Spirit to comfort me where no earthly comfort reaches. Help me to see, even dimly, that this season will not last forever—that You are working redemption even in my pain. Give me courage to reach out for help, and wisdom to know that seeking support is not weakness but obedience. I choose to trust You, though trust feels impossible. Remake my broken thoughts. Restore my hope. And Lord, help me to remember that my worth is not determined by how I feel today, but by the blood of Christ shed for me. In Jesus's name, amen.

Amen.
How to Use This Prayer

Pray this when the weight feels heaviest, perhaps first thing in the morning before the day's demands press down, or in the evening when loneliness deepens. Return to it as often as you need; healing is not linear, and God welcomes your repeated cries for help.

Reflection

Depression often whispers a dangerous lie: that God has abandoned you because you're not faithful enough, not strong enough, not worthy enough. Scripture tells a different story. The Psalms overflow with laments from God's most devoted servants—David, Asaph, even Jesus himself cried out in anguish. God does not despise your pain or distance himself from your sorrow. He invites you to cast your burden upon Him, not because you're weak, but because carrying it alone was never the design. Healing from depression is rarely a single moment; it's a slow, tender restoration. Some days that looks like professional help, medication, community, rest, and prayer working together. God works through all of these means. Your willingness to bring your broken heart to Him—even in your doubt—is itself an act of faith.
