Prayer for an Enemy

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Matthew 5:44 (KJV)

When someone has hurt us deeply, prayer may be the last thing we want to offer on their behalf. Yet Jesus calls us to pray for those who despise us, to bless rather than curse. This prayer is for those moments when you're ready to surrender your hurt and resentment to God, trusting Him to work in both your enemy's life and your own heart. It's a prayer of costly obedience that leads to unexpected freedom.

The Prayer

O God, I come before Thee with a heart heavy and conflicted. There is one who has wounded me, who stands against me, and I confess that bitterness has taken root where love should grow. Yet Thy Word calls me to a higher way, and I feel the stirring of Thy Spirit even now. I ask Thee to soften my heart toward this person. Help me to see them not merely as my adversary, but as one whom Thou lovest and for whom Christ died. Remove the desire for vengeance from my soul; replace it with compassion I cannot manufacture on my own. Give me eyes to see their pain, their brokenness, the wounds that may have driven them to wound me. I choose, by Thy grace, to pray for their good rather than their harm. Bless them, Lord. Guide them toward repentance if they have sinned, and toward healing of whatever broken places exist within them. Help me to speak truth without cruelty, to hold firm boundaries without hatred. Most of all, free me. Free me from the chains of unforgiveness that bind me far more than they bind my enemy. Transform this enmity into something redemptive—perhaps not friendship, but at least the release of my grievance into Thy hands. Give me the grace to love as Thou lovest, without demanding that they first deserve it. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Amen.
How to Use This Prayer

Pray this when unforgiveness is stealing your peace, or when you sense God nudging you toward a costly forgiveness you're not yet ready to give. Return to it regularly; praying for an enemy is often a gradual work of the Holy Spirit, not a one-time event. Let this prayer be your training ground in becoming more like Jesus.

Reflection

Praying for an enemy feels impossible—until we remember that Jesus prayed for those crucifying Him. This isn't about pretending the hurt didn't happen or that boundaries aren't needed. It's about releasing the weight of anger and vengeance that slowly poisons our own souls. When we pray for those who've wronged us, we're not saying they were right; we're saying that God is sovereign over their lives and ours. We're choosing to trust Him with justice while we focus on our own freedom. The miracle isn't that they change (though God can work that), but that we do—we become people shaped by grace rather than grievance, people who reflect Christ's scandalous love even toward the undeserving.
