Prayer Before Sleep

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me to dwell in safety.

Psalms 4:8 (KJV)

As the day fades and your head touches the pillow, it's easy for worry to creep in—concerns about tomorrow, regrets from today, or simply the anxiety that darkness sometimes brings. This prayer is for those nights when you need to release the day's weight and find genuine rest. Praying before sleep isn't just a religious habit; it's an act of faith that invites God's peace into your most vulnerable hours and reminds your soul that you are protected and held.

The Prayer

Father, I come before You at the close of this day, weary in body but seeking peace in my soul. I lay down the burdens I have carried—the concerns, the unfinished tasks, the weight of this world—and I entrust them into Your faithful hands. You neither slumber nor sleep, and Your watchfulness never ceases; therefore, I can rest knowing You are ever vigilant over me and all I hold dear. Guard my mind from anxious thoughts and my heart from fear as darkness falls. Protect me and my loved ones through this night—shield us from harm, both seen and unseen. Let no evil approach our dwelling, for You are our refuge and strength. Quiet the noise within me, the restlessness that clings to weary souls, and replace it with the deep peace that surpasses understanding. As I sleep, renew my body and refresh my spirit. Restore me so that I may wake renewed, ready to serve You and face tomorrow with courage rooted in Your love. Help me to trust that You hold all things in Your hands—my safety, my future, my very life. I commit this night to You, O Lord. Settle my mind upon Your promises and Your faithfulness. May I sleep as one covered by Your grace, secure in the knowledge that You are with me always. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Amen.
How to Use This Prayer

Pray this prayer as you're preparing for bed, either aloud or quietly in your heart. Take a few deep breaths and let each sentence sink in, allowing the truth of God's protection to ease you toward sleep. If anxious thoughts return during the night, simply whisper the opening lines again and remind yourself that the Lord is keeping watch.

Reflection

Notice the confidence in the psalmist's words—not because circumstances are perfect, but because trust in God makes rest possible. Sleep is an act of surrender. When you lay your head down, you're essentially saying, 'I cannot control what happens next; I release this to You.' That's not weakness; that's wisdom. God's promise isn't that nothing bad will ever happen, but that He watches over you while you sleep. He neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4). When you pray before rest, you're aligning your heart with this reality: you don't have to stay awake managing the universe. That's His job. Your job is to trust and to sleep. As you develop this habit, you'll notice something profound—anxiety loses its grip when you genuinely believe you're in good hands. That's the power of faith settling into rest.
