Prayer for Missionaries

You might be praying this because someone you love is on the field right now, thousands of miles away. Or maybe you're a missionary yourself, exhausted and wondering if anyone remembers you're out there. Either way, you've landed here because you sense that prayer is the one thing that actually changes things for the people who've left everything to follow Christ to the unreached.

A Prayer for Missionaries

Father, I come before You on behalf of the missionaries who've left comfort and safety to proclaim Your name where it's never been heard.

Protect them from spiritual attack. The enemy knows their names and their families' names. Shield their minds from doubt, their hearts from despair, their marriages from division. Give them discernment to recognize deception and strength to stand against it.

Provide for their physical needs. Some are hungry. Some live in fear. Some are isolated in ways we cannot imagine. Meet them in those moments when they're alone at night and wondering if the sacrifice is worth it. Remind them that You see them, that You haven't forgotten them, and that their work is not in vain.

Open doors for the gospel. Break through spiritual strongholds in the communities where they serve. Give them boldness to speak, wisdom to know when to speak, and compassion to love the people they're called to reach, even when those people reject the message.

Sustain their families. Protect the children. Guard the marriages. Help their spouses carry the weight of being alone in leadership. Give them community, even when community is hard to find.

Raise up the local church. Let the gospel take root in indigenous leaders who will outlast any missionary. Build movements, not institutions. Let discipleship multiply in ways that show this was Your work, not theirs.

And Lord, break my own heart with the things that break Yours. Don't let me forget these workers. Keep me praying. Keep me supporting. Keep me sending.

Scripture Foundation

Matthew 9:37-38 (KJV) - "Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest." Jesus Himself commanded us to pray for workers in the harvest. This isn't optional; it's a direct instruction from Christ. When you pray for missionaries, you're obeying His explicit command.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (KJV) - "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." Missionaries face spiritual opposition that's often invisible to those at home. Prayer is one of the most powerful weapons available to them, and your prayers strengthen their battle.

Ephesians 6:18-20 (KJV) - "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, also, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak." Paul, one of history's greatest missionaries, asked the church to pray for him. He knew prayer was essential for boldness and endurance. Your prayers have real power.

1 Thessalonians 5:25 (KJV) - "Brethren, pray for us." This simple plea from Paul reveals how much missionaries depend on intercession from the body of Christ. They cannot do this work alone.

Why This Prayer

Missionaries operate in a unique intersection of risk and isolation. They've obeyed a call that most of us haven't experienced, and that obedience costs them. They're separated from their extended families, their cultural identity, their native language (often), and their financial security. Many work in spiritually dark places where the gospel is actively opposed. Some face persecution. All of them face loneliness that's difficult for us to comprehend from a distance.

Prayer isn't a consolation prize when we can't do anything else. It's the primary work of the church. When you pray for missionaries, you're not filling time until real help arrives. You're wielding the very power that breaks strongholds, opens hearts, and sustains workers who are truly on the frontlines of God's kingdom. The theological reality is this: spiritual battles are won in the prayer room before they're won in the field. Your faithful intercession for missionaries is one of the most consequential things you can do with your faith.
