Will We Be Married In Heaven?
When standing at the altar and exchanging vows, many couples dream of a future together in eternity, but does the concept of heaven and marriage hold up to Scripture? Questions about marriage and heaven often come from those who have lost a beloved spouse and wish to understand what their future will be like in the afterlife.
In considering this question, we turn to Scripture to find hope and assurance. The Bible teaches that marriage is between one man and one woman, and this union is designed to represent the relationship between Christ and His Church. Although there is no explicit answer as to whether the momentous ceremony of exchanging marital vows can take place in heaven, we can look to the teachings of God’s Word to gain insight into the topic.
The Apostle Paul speaks of a future resurrection and transformation in Christ, in which our heavenly bodies will be fashioned like His – a hope that should give us courage as we face the days ahead. Paul wrote, “Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely” (1 Corinthians 13:12 NLT).
In heaven, the marriage relationship will be seen quite differently, as God will be our real Bridegroom and we will be His Bride. This union, by the grace of God, will be eternal and free from any kind of suffering or pain that is inextricably linked to earthly marriage.
Therefore, while the Bible doesn’t answer whether we will be married in heaven, we can look to the promises of God’s Word to help guide our faith and assurance. The Lord promises that we will have a glorious eternity in His presence, and whatever our future may bring on earth will pale in comparison to the joys of living eternally in the presence of God.
Despite the uncertainty of what eternity will bring, we can rest assured knowing that because of Christ’s death and resurrection, there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. We can confidently look to the future, knowing that our faith in Jesus Christ brings the guarantee of a glorious homecoming in heaven.
