Why Don’t Mormons Drink Coffee?
Mormons, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are known for abstaining from coffee, but why? To answer this question, we must travel back in time to 1833 when Joseph Smith first articulated a set of health principles that he called “The Word of Wisdom.” It was set forth in what is now known as Doctrine & Covenants, Section 89.
The Word of Wisdom prohibited certain substances, among them being coffee and tea. This was in recognition of the fact that these substances can have deleterious effects on the body, such as increasing one’s risk of heart disease, blood pressure issues, and digestive problems.
Though not explicitly stated in the Word of Wisdom, abstinence from coffee and tea has been a part of Mormon culture ever since. Today, while many Mormons may indulge in a cup of coffee on occasion, it is generally understood that abstinence from coffee and tea is expected of all members of the church.
The purpose of abstaining from coffee, as well as other prohibited substances, is not merely to promote physical health. It is also to ensure that members of the church are following the spiritual guidance that was given by Joseph Smith as part of the Word of Wisdom.
This spiritual guidance extends beyond coffee and tea to include other items, such as recreational drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. In fact, these substances are some of the most strictly forbidden in the Word of Wisdom. Mormons are expected to abstain from these substances entirely, as they are seen as harmful to both physical and spiritual health.
The Word of Wisdom is a reminder of the importance of taking care of our physical health. Abstaining from coffee and other prohibited substances is a way for Mormons to do this. By living according to the Word of Wisdom, Mormons can ensure that their physical health is being taken care of, and that their spiritual health is being nurtured and strengthened.
