Why Don’t Jehovah’s Witness Celebrate Holidays?

Jehovah’s Witnesses are a Christian group that adheres to a strict set of beliefs and practices that govern virtually all parts of their life. One of the most notable of these practices is their abstention from celebrating holidays. For many, the thought of not celebrating holidays may seem strange and even alien, but why do Jehovah’s Witnesses choose to forgo these supposedly joyous occasions?

To better understand why Jehovah’s Witnesses forgo celebrating holidays, one must first understand the basic foundations of their beliefs. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that their lives and all of their activities should be focused on glorifying God, and to do this, they choose to adhere to Biblical teachings rather than those of the world. This includes refraining from participating in practices and activities that the Bible calls “worldly” and therefore are not approved by God.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that nearly all holidays are steeped in paganism and have an origin that lies outside of the Bible. For this reason, they abstain from participating in anything that is connected to such holidays. This includes birthdays, Halloween, Christmas, and even Mother’s Day, which Jehovah’s Witnesses instead prefer to call “Honor Your Mother Day”. Additionally, Jehovah’s Witnesses also avoid celebrating holidays that were established for the purpose of honoring individuals or groups of people, since this goes against their beliefs of only glorifying God.

In lieu of celebrating holidays, Jehovah’s Witnesses focus their energies on participating in activities that are in line with their beliefs and further glorify God. This includes attending religious meetings, participating in door-to-door preaching, and engaging in acts of kindness and charity. These activities provide Jehovah’s Witnesses with joy and fulfillment, and they regard them as being much more meaningful than partaking in worldly practices that are steeped in paganism.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are a peaceful and respectful group that takes their beliefs very seriously. For this reason, they make the conscious decision to abstain from participating in holidays and instead opt for activities that better glorify God.
