Why Do Jewish Orthodox Women Wear Wigs?
Jewish Orthodox women wear wigs for a variety of reasons, most of which are rooted in their religious beliefs. Although many people outside of the Jewish faith find this practice to be a bit unusual, it is nonetheless firmly entrenched in their culture and traditions.
The primary reason that Orthodox Jewish women wear wigs is the principle of modesty, or “tzniut” in Hebrew. This dictates that women should strive to maintain a certain level of modesty in both their dress and their behavior. This extends to the covering of their head and hair, which is seen as a sign of respect to their husbands, families, and most of all, to God. It is believed that if a woman is able to cover her hair, she shows her commitment to the laws of modesty and is more likely to behave in a dignified manner.
Although wearing a wig itself is nothing new, it has become increasingly popular among Orthodox Jewish women in more recent times. Women choose to wear wigs for a variety of reasons including style and convenience. Unlike a scarf or head covering which can be cumbersome and uncomfortable, wigs are much easier to style and are much more comfortable to wear on a daily basis. They come in a variety of colors, styles and lengths, making them a versatile and fashionable choice for Orthodox Jewish women.
In addition to the practicality of wearing a wig, Orthodox Jewish women also wear them as a symbol of faith. Wearing a wig shows that a woman is devoted to her religion and is committed to living life according to their beliefs. For many Orthodox Jewish women, their wig is a reminder of their commitment to their faith and the lengths that they are willing to go to live in accordance with those beliefs.
Although the practice of wearing wigs may seem strange to those outside of the Jewish faith, it is an important part of their culture and traditions. For Orthodox Jewish women, wearing their hairpiece is an outward sign of their commitment to God and serves as a reminder of the sacredness of their faith.
