Why Can’t Jehovah’s Witness Take Blood?
Jehovah’s Witnesses are often asked why they refuse to accept blood transfusions as part of their medical treatment. This refusal to accept blood is based on several Biblical passages and is rooted in an interpretation of the Bible.
The Bible often refers to the shedding of blood as an act of atonement and speaks of the sacredness of blood. In Leviticus 17:11, it states that “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” This verse is used to illustrate that the life of a human is dependent upon the preservation of their blood.
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that receiving a blood transfusion would go against certain Bible teachings. These include that humans should abstain from consuming blood (Acts 15:28, 29) and that it should not be shared or exchanged (Leviticus 17:12). This is why they choose to avoid blood transfusions and opt for alternative treatments if possible.
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that blood transfusions interfere with God’s purpose for humans. They also believe that they cannot take responsibility for another person’s life by receiving their blood. To them, accepting a blood transfusion would be similar to stealing another person’s life, which they regard as unethical and a violation of the Bible’s teachings.
In addition, accepting a blood transfusion would make the recipient morally responsible for the blood donor’s life, which is something that Jehovah’s Witnesses consider unacceptable. According to them, no one should be responsible for another person’s life, which is why they refuse to accept blood transfusions.
Jehovah’s Witnesses also believe that the Bible teaches them to be mindful of their health and to take care of themselves, which is why they are open to using alternatives to blood transfusions. For example, they often opt for treatments that involve the use of non-blood products, such as synthetic proteins and other substitutes.
In conclusion, refusing to accept a blood transfusion is an important practice for Jehovah’s Witnesses, as it is rooted in their interpretation of the Bible. They believe that humans should abstain from consuming blood, and that they should not be responsible for another person’s life. As a result, they prefer to opt for alternative treatments than to accept a blood transfusion.
