Who In The Nba Is Jehovah’s Witness?

Jehovah’s Witnesses – also known as JWs – have been members of the National Basketball Association since the league’s establishment in 1946. Having risen to prominence during the civil rights movement, this religious group has been steadily represented by some of the NBA’s highest-profile players over the years.

Included among that esteemed list of athletes is none other than Hall of Fame point guard and longtime Philadelphia 76ers star Maurice Cheeks, who has been an outspoken member of the faith since his teen years. Cheeks was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness in 1975, after which time he was largely guided by the religion’s faith-based teachings. His commitment to the Scriptures and moral principles taught within the faith earned him the respect of many and eventually led to his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.

Additional players who call themselves Jehovah’s Witnesses include veteran shooting guard Metta World Peace – formerly known as Ron Artest – who was baptized in 2011. World Peace, who still actively practices the religion, has spoken candidly about the spiritual and moral principles he’s embraced as a result of joining the faith. In the same vein, he’s also made a point to emphasize how his viewpoints have shifted since formally joining the faith, going so far as to note that he’s actively tried to put others before himself.

Then there’s another prominent player who became a Jehovah’s Witness while in the NBA – forward/center Thaddeus Young. Raised in a Christian home, Young accepted Jehovah’s Witnesses as his faith in 2009. After studying the Bible for several years, he made the decision to be baptized in 2014. Young has since then sought to stay true to the faith’s teachings, and in 2016 became an elder within the congregation.

It’s also worth mentioning that Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness in 1971, is still an active participant within the faith’s community. Despite his retirement from the NBA, Abdul-Jabbar continues to study and follow the Bible’s teachings.

And although there are only a handful of current and former Jehovah’s Witnesses in the NBA, their contributions to the league and their commitment to the faith are truly exemplary. As evidenced by these athletes’ stories, it’s clear that the value of staying true to one’s religious beliefs is a tremendous motivator. As such, they should be an inspiration to us all – regardless of one’s own religious leanings.
