Where Is The Ten Commandments In The Bible?
The Ten Commandments, also known as the Decalogue, are an important part of both Jewish and Christian religious traditions. They are a set of moral and religious laws that are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament of the Christian Bible. The Ten Commandments are found in Exodus 20:2-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21.
In Exodus 20:2-17, the Ten Commandments are given to Moses and the Israelites by God. In verse 2, God identifies himself as “the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” Then, in verses 3-17, he gives the Ten Commandments:
1. “You shall have no other gods before me.”
2. “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.”
3. “You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.”
4. “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.”
5. “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.”
6. “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”
7. “You shall not murder.”
8. “You shall not commit adultery.”
9. “You shall not steal.”
10. “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”
The Ten Commandments are also mentioned in Deuteronomy 5:6-21. In this passage, God speaks to the Israelites while they are at Mount Sinai and reminds them of the covenant he made with them. He reminds them of the Ten Commandments he gave them in Exodus 20 and asks them to “heed these words of mine and keep them on their hearts.”
The Ten Commandments are seen in both the Old Testament and the New Testament of the Bible. In the New Testament, Jesus reiterates the commandments when he is asked about one of the greatest commandments in Matthew 22:36-40. He says, ”’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ’Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
