Where In The Bible Are The 10 Commandments?

The Ten Commandments, otherwise referred to in the Bible as the Decalogue, are perhaps the most famous and widely-recognized passage in the whole of the Bible. Listed in both the Old and New Testaments, these commandments are God’s direct orders to mankind about how to live in a way that honors God, establishes morality, and introduces a new way of life. These rules have been around since the time of Moses and remain relevant to this day. In the Bible, one can find the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5.

The Ten Commandments are listed in two sets of five. The first set, which appears in Exodus 20, is as follows:

“You shall have no other gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

The second set of five commandments, found in Deuteronomy 5, are as follows:

“You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

These Ten Commandments form the basis of the Jewish and Christian faiths and are considered by many to be the foundation of morality and law. The commandments are still relevant today, serving as guidance and as a reminder to individuals of how to live according to God’s will. They help to establish a sense of right and wrong, giving us a moral compass that can be used to make decisions, deal with challenges, and make the right choices. By following God’s commands, individuals can strive to lead better lives, honoring God and treating others with respect and dignity.

Ultimately, the Ten Commandments remain an integral part of the Bible and serve as a reminder to all believers of God’s will. By following these commandments, individuals can move closer to God and lead lives that bring glory and honor to His name.
