Where Do Jewish People Live?
When thinking of Jewish people, it’s common to think of Jews living in one central place. A place they call home. However, while Jews may be connected by a shared history, culture, and faith, they are by no means limited to living in one spot.
Rather, Jewish people live in a wide array of locales, from bustling cities throughout the world, to quaint villages in remote regions. From stately metropolises like New York City, Los Angeles, and Jerusalem, to quaint communities like Zandau, Germany or Norwalk, Connecticut, Jews have spread their influence to all corners of the globe.
This dispersion dates back to well before the founding of the modern nation state of Israel in 1948. The Jewish population in the area today known as Israel, has grown and shifted since the formation of the country. It’s estimated that more than 6 million Jews now call Israel home.
But the Israeli population isn’t the only population in flux. Jewish people have been geographically mobile for centuries, and these days, large Jewish populations can be found in the United States, Europe, and throughout Latin America.
In the United States, for example, Jewish people are a diverse and vibrant presence in many of the country’s major cities. And, according to the American Jewish Yearbook 2017, more than 6.5 million Jews now live in the US. This population remains concentrated in several metropolitan areas, with New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami being home to the most Jews.
The story is much the same in Europe, where centuries of diaspora have created large, vibrant Jewish populations in cities like London and Paris. One estimate suggests that the Jewish population in Europe could exceed 2 million.
In Latin America, meanwhile, estimates of the Jewish population range from 500,000 to 2 million. This includes large populations in cities like Mexico City, São Paulo, and Buenos Aires.
Overall, Jewish people represent a global population of nearly 14 million people who, while sharing a common cultural and spiritual identity, are spread out over numerous regions, countries, and cities around the world. As such, Jewish people are a highly diverse and mobile people, and the locations in which they live, from bustling metropolises to small towns, offer a testament to the far-reaching and vibrant nature of the Jewish population.
