When Was The Mormon Church Founded?
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) was founded on April 6, 1830, in upstate New York. The Church was established by Joseph Smith Jr., a young man who had a spiritual awakening in the early 1820s. According to his own accounts, Smith was visited by an angel named Moroni who showed him a set of golden plates. Smith was told that these plates contained an ancient record of a lost civilization in North America.
Smith translated the plates and the resulting book, The Book of Mormon, was published in March of 1830. With this publication, the foundational principles of the LDS Church were introduced to the public. At the same time, Smith was continuing to receive prophetic revelations. After establishing a small following in both New York and Pennsylvania, Smith and five witnesses proclaimed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be a true and living church on April 6, 1830.
Since its founding, the Church has grown to become the fourth largest denomination in the U.S. and one of the largest in the world. Today, the LDS Church is comprised of sixteen million members in nearly 200 countries and territories. As adherents to the restored gospel, members of the Church are unified by their belief in Jesus Christ, His Atonement, and His teachings.
While the Church focuses on living a Christ-centered life and serving others, it does provide opportunities for members to learn and grow in their faith. Through weekly worship services, missionary work, and family and personal study, members can build their testimonies of the gospel. They are also encouraged to live according to Church standards, which include compliance with the Word of Wisdom, abstaining from premarital sexual activity, and being honest and faithful in all of their dealings.
Since its founding, the LDS Church has been viewed by some as an unorthodox religion, yet today its members are respected by people all over the world. The Church continues to spread its message of faith and hope, and its members strive to serve others, both those of the LDS faith and those outside the faith. With a strong mission to help others come unto Christ, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has maintained its strong and faithful following since its inception in April of 1830.
