When I Get To Heaven John Prine Lyrics?
When the late, great John Prine released “When I Get to Heaven”, he touched the hearts of many with his unique take on what it’s like to get to heaven after you’ve lived your life. As a Christian, I can appreciate the way he blends his Christian faith with humor, as well as how he speaks to the longing we all have to be reunited with our loved ones in the afterlife.
The song begins, “When I get to Heaven, gonna shake God’s hand/ Sure as I’m standing here I’m gonna be the happiest man/ When I get to Heaven I’m gonna sing and dance/ I’m gonna throw my arms around my savior’s feet.” These lyrics clearly show John Prine’s faith. He looks forward to arriving in Heaven and being welcomed into the arms of God. He’s excited to be reunited with his loved ones that had gone on before and be granted entry into the joys of Heaven.
The lyrics then go on to say, “When I get to Heaven, gonna play all night/ Be a millionaire in the morning sun when I get to Heaven/ When I get to Heaven, gonna drive a great big car/ Gotta’ get my hat so I can be a millionaire.” John Prine continues by saying that when he gets to Heaven, he’ll be a millionaire, and he’ll be able to afford all the luxuries that come with that wealth. He’s looking forward to the joys of Heaven after having struggled through this life, and wanting to have the same comforts we enjoy here on earth in the next.
The song winds down with the lines, “When I get to Heaven, gonna smoke a big cigar/ Gonna watch the moon go ’round the world and laugh out loud/ When I get to Heaven, gonna dance with the stars/ Gonna be the most beautiful angel in the sky.” By using the imagery of smoking a cigar, watching the moon go around the world, and dancing with the stars, John Prine paints a vivid picture of the joys that await us in Heaven. He’s looking forward to the beauty and peace of Heaven and the wondrous joys of eternity.
John Prine’s “When I Get to Heaven” is a touching and beautiful reminder of the hope we all have of getting to Heaven. He captures the longing that Christians feel to be reunited with our loved ones, while still being able to enjoy the beauty and joys of Heaven. By combining faith and humor, he creates an uplifting and inspiring tune that will stay with the listener long after the song has ended.
