What Religion Was Margaret Thatcher?
Margaret Thatcher was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. Throughout her tenure, Thatcher often referred to her Christian faith as the basis for many of her decisions in both political and personal matters.
Although born into a midlands Methodist family, by the early 1950s Thatcher had converted to Anglicanism and was a regular attendee of the Church of England. During her term in 10 Downing Street, Thatcher was regularly a communicant at St. John’s Church, Smith Square, near the Houses of Parliament.
Thatcher’s Christian beliefs played a strong role in the way she viewed and pursued politics. She believed that government had an obligation to help the poor and protect the weak, but that individuals and families must take personal responsibility for their own salvation. She often referred to her belief in “providence,” as demonstrated in her use of language such as “a hand up, not a hand out.” As she explained in her memoirs, “The idea of Providence . . . embodied my conservative instincts and continu[ed] to inform my thinking and actions.”
Thatcher was also a strong advocate for the sanctity of marriage. She was a strong believer in the concept of the traditional family unit, and viewed any interference of the state in family affairs as dangerous and detrimental.
Thatcher’s religious convictions played a prominent role in her personal and political life. Her faith guided her in the decisions she made and the principles she upheld during her time as Prime Minister. Thatcher’s belief in the power of God can serve as an example to those who look to her leadership and influence.
