What Religion Was Indira Gandhi?
Indira Gandhi was a leader of the Indian National Congress, which is the largest political party in India. She served as the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977, and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. Gandhi was born into an upper-class, influential Indian family, her father being Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister.
Gandhi was raised in a traditionally Hindu household, but her beliefs developed and evolved over the course of her life. She was initially raised with a pantheistic view of religion, which allowed her to accept multiple religions. She believed in some aspects of Hinduism, including the sacredness of the cow and respect for ancient religious scriptures, and also believed in certain aspects of Islam, such as the teachings of the Qu’ran. She also believed in many of India’s traditional Western values and principles, such as democracy and human rights.
Gandhi was a believer in and an advocate of religious tolerance. She was well known for saying, “No single religion should be allowed to dominate any other religion or any part of the country.” She believed strongly in religious freedom and sought to promote it through her political career. Her administration ended discrimination based on religion and brought together representatives of different religions to discuss how to make India a more tolerant and united country. She used her political power to enact laws protecting religious freedom and set up committees to investigate claims of religious persecution.
Gandhi was not a frequent churchgoer, and it is unclear what her specific faith beliefs were. She was known to be respectful of all religious beliefs, and her actions suggest that she believed in a “greater power” above herself. She was a dedicated servant of the people and a motivating force for promoting justice, equality, and realization of human rights in India.
Gandhi was a strong believer in personal spirituality and her own individual conscience. She said, “I have not found in the scriptures that God has instructed us to do anything specific. It is my conscience and my own individual understanding of the scriptures that determine what I believe and what I do.” She was committed to trying her best to please God, and she believed that if one did their best with what was in their control, God would provide the rest. Gandhi’s faith beliefs were deeply rooted in her own personal spirituality, allowing her to live a life of peace, justice, and equality for the people of India.
