What Religion Was Abraham Lincoln?
Abraham Lincoln was a devout Christian who practiced a traditional Protestant religion. Throughout his life and career, he often referred to the teachings of the Bible and God’s divine plan. For example, many of his speeches, writings, and other political engagements had a strong religious tone, such as his famous address at Gettysburg.
Lincoln himself even declared that “this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ.” He often pointed to the concepts of redemption and resurrection as the impetus for the nation’s founding. In addition to his Christian faith, Lincoln was a Unitarian, which was the most common Protestant denomination of his time. Unitarianism emphasized the unity of God, the moral nature of Jesus, and spiritual renewal. Lincoln’s personal doctrine, as expressed in his speeches, was one of equality and justice for all, achieved through literacy and education.
Lincoln’s respect for the Bible and Christianity was evident in his writings, his speeches, and his personal life as well. He frequently quoted verses from Proverbs and the Gospels in his speeches. He is quoted as saying, “In regard to this Great Book, I have but to say, “It is the best gift God has given to man. All the good the Savior gave to the world was communicated through this book.” Lincoln is also known to have studied the Bible regularly and was known to carry one with him when traveling. He was also an active member of his local church and was committed to chapel attendance.
Throughout his life, Lincoln’s faith was an integral part of his identity. It was the lens through which he viewed the world and his place in it. By understanding his faith and his relationship with God, we can better understand the moral and ethical principles that helped shape his political career.
