What Religion Is Mother Teresa?

Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun and missionary known worldwide for her work with the poor and sick. Born in Macedonia to Albanian parents in 1910, she joined the Loreto Sisters of Dublin in 1928 and later changed her name to Sister Teresa. As a young woman, she experienced a spiritual calling inspired by a vision of Jesus Christ. Despite her family’s lack of understanding and support, she chose to become a nun and dedicate herself to God’s service.

In 1931, she left the Loreto Sisters of Dublin and moved to India, where she worked as a teacher in a girl’s school. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation dedicated to helping the most impoverished and destitute people of Indian society. Working out of Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), the order she helped found provided medical care, education, and housing for the poorest of the poor. In addition, the order operates centers that provide shelter and support for HIV-positive people, the homeless, women with children, elderly people, and the sick.

Mother Teresa is well known for her tireless efforts to alleviate the suffering of others. Not only did she devote her life to service, she taught others to do the same. Her teachings serve as a reminder that we can all lead lives in service to others, no matter our spiritual or economic resources. She believed that poverty was not only financial, but was made up of loneliness, addiction, and a lack of love and spirituality, and that those in need deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. She dedicated her life to Jesus, and followed a path of service, humility, and compassion.
