What Religion Is Martin Luther King Jr.?
Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist preacher and civil rights activist, and his faith was based on the teachings of the Bible. He grew up in a Baptist family and attended Baptist churches. As a result, his life was deeply affected and informed by the teachings and values of Baptist Christianity.
One of the core values that drove King’s life and activism was his faith. King was deeply committed to the teachings of Jesus, which drove his commitment to social justice. His commitment to civil rights was informed by his faith in the freedom of all people, regardless of their race. He also believed that spiritual growth was essential to our wellbeing, and viewed service to humanity as an indispensable part of a meaningful life.
In King’s legendary “I Have a Dream” speech, he spoke of peace and justice informed by his faith. He said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'” He also spoke of his faith in God and trust in the Bible. He said, “Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'”
King’s commitment to his faith did not allow him to merely talk about it, but to live it as well. He believed that one of the most important ways to grow in faith was through prayer and Bible study. He had a regular practice of morning and evening prayer, and dedicated time to read and meditate on the Bible. He said, “If you want to be a true Christian and really live the teachings of Jesus, you will never get away from the Bible.”
