What Is The Sacred Text Of Buddhism?
The Sacred Text of Buddhism is the Buddhist Canon or Tripitaka. It is an extensive collection of teachings passed down through the generations by Shakyamuni Buddha, or Gautama Buddha. The Canon is made up of three parts: the Sutra Pitaka, the Vinaya Pitaka, and the Abhidharma Pitaka. Each part is divided into five major categories and then further divided into numerous sub-sections.
The Sutra Pitaka is the primary collection of Buddhist teachings, consisting of texts which discuss various aspects of the Buddhist path. Its five major categories are:
1. Digha Nikaya – The Long Discourses
2. Majjhima Nikaya – The Middle Length Discourses
3. Samyutta Nikaya – The Connected Discourses
4. Anguttara Nikaya – The Numerical Discourses
5. Khuddaka Nikaya – The Miscellaneous Discourses.
The Vinaya Pitaka contains the rules and guidelines that help guide the behavior of monks and nuns, as well as lay people. Its five major categories are:
1. Parajika Pali – Rules of Defeats
2. Pacittiya Pali – Rules of penance
3. Mahavagga Pali – The Great Chapter
4. Cullavagga Pali – The Smaller Chapter
5. Parivara Pali – The Supplementary Rules
The Abhidharma Pitaka consists of philosophical and psychological teachings and commentaries on Buddhist ethics, meditation, and other topics. Its five major categories are:
1. Dhammasangani Pali – The Book of Classification
2. Vibhanga Pali – The Book of Divisions
3. Dhatukatha Pali – The Discussion of Elements
4. Puggalapannatti Pali – The Designation of Persons
5. Kathavatthu Pali – The Points of Controversy
The Tripitaka and its related commentaries and commentaries form the core of the Buddhist teachings. They provide insight into the philosophy, ethics, and psychology of Buddhism, and provide a foundation for practice and contemplation.
The Tripitaka has been translated into various languages, including Chinese, Tibetan, Japanese, and English, allowing more people to access the teachings. It is considered an essential resource for learning and understanding Buddhism.
The Tripitaka is seen not only as a source of knowledge and teachings, but also as a source of inspiration and spiritual nourishment. It is believed that if one studies and practices the teachings contained in the Canon, one can become a more enlightened individual, as well as benefit humanity as a whole.
