What Is New Testament?
The New Testament is a unique and powerful compilation of twenty-seven books that form the second part of the Bible, the Christian holy book. It tells the story of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, his crucifixion and resurrection, and his teachings. The New Testament also tells the story of the spread of the early Church and its struggles and triumphs.
The New Testament is the source of hope and faith for millions of Christians around the world today. In it, are found the accounts of Jesus’ birth, life, teachings, death, and resurrection, which form the basis of Christian identity and beliefs.
Long before it was written down on parchment, the New Testament was recorded orally by eyewitnesses of Jesus’ life and told to others. Eventually, it was written down by people inspired by God, using the Greek language, known as “Koine” or “common” Greek. The twenty-seven books of the New Testament were written over a period of time, between the 40’s and 80’s AD, and were selected and organized into the New Testament by the early Church leaders, who considered them to be the most accurate accounts of the life, teachings, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The first four books of the New Testament are the Gospels. These are the stories of the life and ministry of Jesus, primarily told through the eyes of four authors: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Each Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ birth and life, his teachings, and his death and resurrection, from the point of view of the author.
The rest of the New Testament is made up of letters, historical books, and the book of Revelation. The letters were written by apostles of Jesus and other early Christian leaders to various churches and individuals. These letters contain guidance for new Christian converts and advice for living a Christian life. There are also historical books that provide a glimpse into the early Church and its struggles and triumphs. Finally, the last book of the New Testament, the book of Revelation, is a prophetic vision of heaven and end times.
The New Testament is an essential piece of literature, not only to Christians, but to any person with an interest in history. It tells the story of Jesus, and the development of the early Church, which are pivotal events in human history and continue to have an impact today. Through reading the New Testament, one can gain insight into the fascinating culture of Judea and Galilee in the first century, and also gain a greater understanding of the teachings of Jesus and the early Church.
