What Is Love In The Bible?

Love is a powerful emotion that is a major theme in the Bible. From God’s love for humanity, to the love of a husband and wife, and the love of a good friend, Scripture is full of examples and teachings on love. To understand love in the Bible, we must first look at the origin of love.

God is love. 1 John 4:8 says, “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” This is one of the most notable verses in the Bible regarding love, and it sets the foundation for understanding love in the spiritual sense. All love originates from God. He is the source for all things good, including love. Without God, there would be no love.

The Bible describes God’s love for his people as unconditional and everlasting (Jeremiah 31:3). God’s love is seen in his willingness to forgive, even when we fail to meet His standards. In the New Testament, we see a perfect example of God’s love in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the ultimate display of God’s love for mankind. He came to earth to pay the price for our sins and show us the way to true love and joy.

The Bible also speaks extensively about the love between a husband and wife. Marriage is a holy institution between a man and woman (Genesis 2:24). 1 Corinthians 13 details the characteristics of true love within a marriage. It is patient and kind, never jealous, and it keeps no record of wrongs. As a husband and wife come together, they should strive to love each other with this type of self-sacrificing love.

In addition to love between a husband and wife, the Bible also speaks of the importance of loving others. Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39). This simple command from our Savior is the perfect example of how we should love all people, even those who are not like us. We should also show love for our enemies, as Jesus commanded us to do (Matthew 5:44). This kind of love goes far beyond being nice or passive – it is an active, sacrificial love.

Finally, the Bible speaks of love as a part of a mature, spiritual walk. As we grow in our faith, we should strive to show God’s love to others, even when they are difficult to love. Galatians 5:22-23 states, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” This scripture shows us that, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can be equipped to show love in every situation.

Love is a powerful emotion that is a major theme in the Bible. From God’s love for humanity, to the love of a husband and wife, and the love of a good friend, Scripture is full of examples and teachings on love. God is the origin of love, and He is the source of all things good. We can learn important lessons about the type of love we should show to others through His Word. As we grow in our faith, we must strive to show God’s love to others – even when it is difficult to do so.
