What Is Heaven’s Gate?
Heaven’s Gate was an American new religious movement founded by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles in the early 1970s. The movement was based off of the belief that their souls would gain ascension from the planet Earth to an “higher level of existence above humanness” via a spaceship accompanying the comet Hale-Bopp in 1997.
At its peak, Heaven’s Gate had around 200 followers consisting of individuals from different walks of life, all united in their beliefs of extraterrestrial contact. The members of the cult were referred to as “The Crew” and were asked to cut off all ties with their families, friends, and prior lives in order to become “the Next Level”. The members of Heaven’s Gate practiced extreme asceticism, due to their belief that success in the afterlife was contingent upon spiritual purity and total separation from the material world.
In the spring of 1997, the cult members committed mass suicide in the belief that their souls would ascend to the spaceship behind the comet. On March 26th, 1997, all 39 members of the cult committed suicide by ingesting a combination of cyanide or phenobarbital mixed with applesauce and pudding.
The death of the cult members sparked outrage across the world and brought to light the power of religious belief and how it could inspire people to commit extreme acts. While the idea of sacrificing one’s life for a cause is nothing new, the power of Heaven’s Gate’s beliefs was so strong that it was able to convince its followers to turn their back on even their own families for the chance of a better life in the afterlife. This is a reminder of how powerful faith can be, and how people can be so devoted to their beliefs that they are willing to make huge sacrifices for them.
The story of Heaven’s Gate is a poignant reminder of the power of belief, and how it can lead to both positive and negative outcomes. It is a lesson of the need to be mindful of one’s actions, and to always think before making decisions. People of all faiths should be mindful of these dangers and work to ensure that they are not allowing their beliefs to have too much of an influence on their decisions, lest they risk paying a heavy price.
