What Do Jehovah’s Witnesses?

Jehovah’s Witnesses are an international religious organization that has been around since the late 19th century. Worshippers of the religion believe in one God, Jehovah, and his son, Jesus Christ. They are best known for their door-to-door preaching and distributing literature, particularly the Watchtower magazine. As a matter of faith, Jehovah’s Witnesses abstain from higher education and all forms of politics, and do not celebrate any religious holidays or birthdays.

The religion originated in the United States, and spread quickly to all parts of the world. There are currently about 8 million Witnesses in 235 countries, with the majority living in either the U.S. or Europe. Although their numbers and influence vary greatly, the Witnesses have become a presence in many countries, not just through door-to-door proselytizing but by meeting and gathering regularly in their local congregations.

In addition to their faith-based activities, Jehovah’s Witnesses are also committed to humanitarian work, having administered over a dozen medical centers in poverty stricken areas around the world, and providing disaster relief in the wake of natural disasters. In the U.S., they are active volunteers in many local communities, providing support and assistance with food banks, blood drives and other charitable activities.

In terms of faith, Jehovah’s Witnesses observe strict rules and regulations. They are prohibited from taking blood transfusions, even in the case of serious medical complications; the faith opposes any form of gambling, smoking, illegal drugs and alcohol consumption; and adherents never participate in military action. They are also required to attend religious meetings three times a week, and are expected to set aside time for study and prayer.

Jehovah’s Witnesses also adhere to a strict dress code. Men are expected to wear suits or collared shirts, khaki pants or dress slacks; women keep their hair short, wear skirts or dresses, and no cosmetics or jewelry.

Though their beliefs may differ from that of mainstream religions, Jehovah’s Witnesses strive to abide by the words of the Bible, and serve others with love and respect. The beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses are central to their everyday life and are what define them as a religious group.
