Is Weird Al Jewish?
Weird Al Yankovic has created a comedic career centered around parody and satire. His music has delighted fans across the globe for decades, and with it, many questions have been raised surrounding his religious background. Is Weird Al Jewish? The answer is complicated.
Weird Al was born in 1959 to Mary Elizabeth and Nick Yankovic in Lynwood, California. His parents are of Croatian and Italian descent, respectively, and both were raised Roman Catholic. Mary had converted to Catholicism when marrying Nick, who was born into the faith. Despite this, Weird Al was never baptized, though he was heavily involved in the Catholic Church as a child. His father even served as an altar boy at their local parish.
Weird Al himself has openly addressed his religious affiliation on a number of occasions. In an interview with NPR in 2014, he stated that he is “not particularly religious” and “doesn’t really adhere to any particular organized religion.” Weird Al has even joked in the past about how he’s “technically Catholic,” though he’s never attended church as an adult.
When it comes to his Jewish roots, Weird Al’s family tree is rather complicated. His great-grandfather, Franciszek Yankovic, was born in Croatia to Jewish parents. While his father did not follow Judaism, his mother did so devoutly, maintaining a kosher home and observing the Sabbath. The family eventually converted to Catholicism in 1890, as per the common practice at the time.
Despite his Croatian Jewish heritage, Weird Al has never expressed any interest in pursuing the faith himself. In fact, he’s openly stated he is not a part of any organized religion. As such, it is safe to say that, for all intents and purposes, Weird Al Yankovic is not Jewish.
Still, it appears that Weird Al’s Jewish roots have had an impact on him in subtle ways. For example, he released a parody version of the classic Jewish folk song, “Hava Nagila,” titled “Answering Machine.” Likewise, he has expressed admiration for fellow comedians and performers who are of Jewish descent (including Mel Brooks, Lenny Bruce, and Jack Benny).
Ultimately, the answer to the question “Is Weird Al Jewish?” is complicated, with the answer definitively being no. However, the influence of his Jewish heritage has certainly been felt in his work, as is evidenced by his choice of parody material and comedic influences.
