Is Mark Wahlberg Jewish?
Mark Wahlberg is often assumed to be Jewish due to his middle initial ‘W’, but in reality, his background is mixed. He was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts to a Catholic Irish mother and a Protestant father of Swedish descent. Although it has been thought that Wahlberg was Jewish because his grandfather was Jewish, Jewish faith does not pass through the father’s lineage and therefore, it is not a strong indication that he is Jewish.
Growing up, Wahlberg was surrounded by a large extended Italian-Catholic family, so it can be assumed that he maintains a connection to Catholicism. Despite this, Wahlberg has not publicly commented on his faith, so it is hard to be sure of what his exact views on religion are. Although in an interview with Parade magazine he stated that he was spiritual and that he was “in awe of the power of prayer”, he never explicitly stated whether he follows any specific religion.
Another clue as to Wahlberg’s religious views can be taken from his filmography. Wahlberg is known to have starred in a number of faith-based films, most notably The Fighter (2010) and Deepwater Horizon (2016). The Fighter features a prominent theme of faith, as Wahlberg’s character Mickey Ward has to battle both his sense of purpose and his inner demons in order to succeed. Deepwater Horizon, on the other hand, has a much more subtle undertone of faith, as people must rely on their inner strength and perseverance in order to survive the disaster.
It is clear that faith plays an important role in Wahlberg’s life, although the specifics of his beliefs remain unclear. As such, it is impossible to definitively say whether or not he is Jewish, although his grandparent’s heritage may suggest so. Nevertheless, Wahlberg’s background is a testament to the muddled melting pot of faith and culture that he was born into, and it is clear that he has had a varied and rich spiritual upbringing.
