Is Mark Levin Jewish?
Mark Levin, a powerful voice in the American conservative movement, has a fascinating background, one that has raised the question of his religious beliefs. While Levin himself has never spoken out on the matter, a close look at his family and their history reveals that he may very well be of Jewish heritage.
Levin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1957 and was raised in a Jewish family. His great-grandparents were Jewish immigrants who moved to the United States from Belarus in 1904, and his father worked in the grocery business. Levin attended Cheltenham High School, a public school with a substantial Jewish student body. The Cheltenham School District also includes several synagogues and Jewish cemeteries.
Throughout his life and career, Levin has occasionally made public references to his family’s Jewish heritage. In 2017, Levin tweeted a picture of himself with the caption, “Remembering those who perished in the Holocaust. Never forget.” He also once mentioned on the radio that Passover was a favorite holiday in his family.
In addition to his personal and family history, Levin’s professional career has some Jewish links as well. In 2011, Levin was a guest speaker at the Zionist Organization of America Awards Dinner, an event honoring individuals for their support and promotion of the Jewish people and Israel.
Furthermore, Levin’s legal career has been closely tied to his Judaism. He served as the chief of staff to the late U.S. Representative and lawyer, Geraldine A. Ferraro, the first female vice presidential candidate. He also held a prominent legal post at the U.S. Department of Justice under then-U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese. While there, he worked on issues related to religious liberty and the rights of Jewish people in the Soviet Union.
Ultimately, while it is impossible to definitively say whether or not Levin is Jewish, his upbringing, family background, and professional links, all hint strongly that he is indeed of Jewish heritage.
