Is Lex De Azevedo A Mormon?
Lex de Azevedo is a composer and musical director, most well known for his work on the musical The Other Side of Heaven. Although there is no easily verifiable record that he is a practicing member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), there is evidence to suggest that he has some level of affiliation with the LDS Church.
Lex de Azevedo was born in Salt Lake City Utah in 1937, which is the center of the Mormon faith. He was embraced by the talent of The Tabernacle Choir at a young age, and performed with the choir as a child. He was also born into a musical family, his father being well-known composer, arranger, and conductor, Jay de Azevedo. As well, one of his sisters runs a performing arts school in Provo, Utah, which is home to Brigham Young University, a major education center for members of the LDS Church. He has several former students of his who are members of the Church and he mentions their involvement with the Church in his biographies.
Aside from these more direct connections to the LDS Church, much of the music that Lex de Azevedo has written and composed throughout his career is based in faith. One of his most well known works, The Other Side of Heaven, draws on the biblical story of Moses. He is also a multiple Grammy Award winner for his work on the album, Singers & Songwriters: Sunday Morning, which contains many hymns and songs of faith.
Due to his childhood and family history, Lex de Azevedo likely has at least some sort of awareness or connection to the LDS Church. Though it can’t be confirmed, it is likely that his music has been inspired by his faith.
