Is Jordan B Peterson An Atheist?
Jordan B Peterson is an intriguing figure in the world of modern spirituality and philosophy. While he has made it clear that he does not consider himself an atheist, he definitely has strong opinions about atheism. The question of whether he is an atheist or not is not a simple one to answer, and depends rather heavily on his own definitions of god, faith, and belief.
To begin with, it is worth mentioning what Jordan B Peterson himself has said on the topic. In an interview with Michael Shermer on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he said, “No, I’m not [an atheist]. I’m not an atheist. I’m agnostic. I don’t know what the nature of the creator is, if there is a creator. But I have lots of faith.” Here, he is clearly stating that he does not consider himself an atheist, and he does hold faith in some form or another.
So, what does Peterson mean when he says that he is not an atheist, but does have faith? According to Peterson, faith is not about believing in a god or gods, but rather about understanding the power of something greater than ourselves. He has said that he does believe in something greater than himself, and this something is “a great mystery that is beyond my understanding and that I don’t think I can ever explain.” He has also said that this faith is “ineffable and inexplicable,” which implies that it is something that cannot be expressed in words, and thus cannot be easily defined.
This faith appears to be an amalgamation of different philosophies and belief systems, as evidenced by his lectures and books. He often talks about the importance of understanding the structure and dynamics of the universe, and of understanding the power of chaos. He also often speaks of the need to accept the mystery of life and the unknown, rather than trying to blindly believe in something.
In his book 12 Rules For Life: An Antidote to Chaos, Peterson proposes that “The universe is complex and chaotic and not easily understood … We can’t know what will happen next or how the system will evolve.” This is further evidence that Peterson does not believe in a traditional religious conception of god, but rather holds a more metaphysical interpretation of faith and belief.
Therefore, it is clear that Jordan B Peterson is not an atheist. He does not deny the existence of a god or gods, but rather sees faith as a mysterious, unknowable force that surpasses our understanding and defies explanation. In his lectures and books he often talks about the importance of understanding the structure and dynamics of the universe, and of accepting the mystery of life and the unknown. Ultimately, he believes that faith is something that cannot be expressed in words, and thus cannot be easily defined.
