Is Jon Hamm Jewish?
Jon Hamm is a famously successful American actor, best known for his portrayal of Don Draper in the hit TV series Mad Men. He has a storied career that has spanned movies, television, and theatre and has earned him several awards and nominations. A compelling part of his career is his speculation as to whether he is Jewish or not.
The star’s Jewish heritage has been the subject of intense debate. At the time of his birth in St. Louis, Missouri in 1971, his mother, Deborah, was a secretary at a Catholic hospital, and his father, Daniel, was a financial adviser. But the two never married, and most details of his mother’s past are unknown, leaving many to speculate that she is Jewish.
In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Hamm himself claimed that he was “ethnically ambiguous,” while hinting that his mother’s background could be related to her family’s Judaism. He acknowledged that he had been raised by a Jewish family, and added that “we’re talking about a lot of generations back,” saying that it is “kind of an interesting mystery.”
In addition to these hints about his possible Jewish heritage, many have pointed out that Hamm appeared in an episode of the TV series Entourage in which he plays an Orthodox Jew. Fans also consider his friendship with the Jewish-American actor Adam Goldberg to bolster the possibility that Hamm is Jewish.
In 2019, Hamm was presented with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Washington’s Humanitarian Award for his commitment to LGBTQ causes and his involvement in the fight against anti-Semitism, providing further evidence of his potential Jewish heritage.
But despite some rumors and speculation, Hamm has yet to openly identify himself as Jewish, as his own identity remains a mystery—one that he has never seemed keen to solve. Nevertheless, Hamm’s career, uniquely ambiguous background and ongoing commitment to causes important to Jews, continue to spark debate about whether he is Jewish or not.
