Is Jesus Mentioned In The Old Testament?
The Old Testament of the Bible contains many references to Jesus long before His birth in Bethlehem. Although most of these references are indirect, they are nonetheless integral to understanding the nature of God and His plan for the salvation of mankind.
One of the most significant Old Testament prophecies of Jesus comes from the book of Isaiah, a prophet of the eighth century BC. This book contains a number of prophecies of the coming messiah, several of which are specific enough to describe aspects of Jesus’ life and ministry. For instance, Isaiah 7:14 declares that the messiah will be born of a virgin, while Isaiah 9:6-7 foretells that he will be called “Mighty God” and “Everlasting Father.” Other prophecies from Isaiah name specific towns where Jesus would be born and live as an adult.
The book of Daniel also contains references to the coming messiah. Daniel 9:26 speaks of a coming ruler who will be “cut off” and “have nothing” following his death, a clear reference to the crucifixion. Daniel also makes a prophetic reference to the timing of Jesus’ arrival—400 years after the Babylonian Captivity—in Daniel 9:25-26.
The book of Psalms also contains a number of references to Jesus. Notably, Psalm 2:7 speaks of an “anointed one” who will be the son of God. This psalm is later quoted by the Apostle Paul (Acts 13:33), who explains it as a prophetic reference to Jesus. Other references to Jesus in the Psalms include Psalm 16:10, which prophesies of the resurrection, and Psalm 22:16-18, which contains a remarkably accurate description of Jesus’ crucifixion.
The Old Testament is full of prophecies of the coming of Jesus Christ. Through these prophecies, we can gain an understanding of the divine plan of salvation and the characteristics of the One who would bring it about.
