Is Donald Trump A Mormon?
Donald Trump is not a Mormon, despite some speculation to the contrary. Though Trump’s mother, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, was born in Scotland, she had grown up in the Outer Hebridies, where nearly all residents were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). In fact, it was widely believed that Mary Anne MacLeod Trump was a Mormon, due to her living in the predominantly LDS community. In addition, Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump, was also known for making charitable donations to the LDS church.
However, Donald Trump is not, nor has he ever been, a practicing member or adherent of the Mormon faith. In an interview with The Associated Press, Trump responded to questions on the subject of his religious conviction by saying “I am a Presbyterian”.
The questions surrounding whether Donald Trump is Mormon began when he began to rise to prominence in the political realm. Although the Trump family had strong ties to the LDS church, Donald Trump has no recorded evidence of any Mormon affiliation. Additionally, Donald Trump’s religious beliefs have seen intersecting stories, which points to the possibility that he is not a Mormon. For instance, his daughter, Ivanka Trump, converted to Judaism when she married Kushner in 2009. Donald Trump’s youngest son, Barron Trump, is also observed regularly attending a Presbyterian Church in Florida with his father.
In July 2015, Trump attended a meeting of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, an evangelical Christian organization that is opposed to the LDS church, to address an audience of Christian conservatives. While speaking, Trump openly shared his Christian faith and made a point to state that he was not a Mormon.
While Donald Trump does not appear to be a Mormon, he has close ties to the faith and has expressed admiration for the LDS church. As a result, it has been speculated that Trump may have some sort of spiritual connection to the religion, though he has yet to make a public statement to that effect. Trump’s Presbyterian beliefs are still a matter of speculation, as he has not identified with any particular denomination of the faith. Regardless of his personal beliefs, Donald Trump is not, and has never been, a practicing member of the Mormon faith.
