How Tall Was Goliath In The Bible?

Goliath is one of the most famous characters in the Bible, the giant Philistine warrior who was famously defeated by the shepherd boy David in the story of David and Goliath. In the Bible, the height of Goliath is given in terms of cubits, which is an ancient unit of measurement used throughout the Bible. In 1 Samuel 17:4, it states that Goliath was “six cubits and a span,” which is approximately nine and a half feet tall.

The height of Goliath, as recorded in the Bible, has been disputed by historians since ancient times. Some have argued that the cubit that was used in the Bible was slightly shorter than a traditional cubit, while others have argued that Goliath was actually over 10 feet tall. Despite these various interpretations of the exact size of Goliath, it is generally accepted today that Goliath was, at least, nine and a half feet tall.

This height, however, is still extraordinary when compared with the average height of humans in the Iron Age, which is estimated to have been around five and a half feet. This would mean that Goliath was nearly twice as tall as the average person, making him an imposing figure, even when not carrying his armor and weapons.

In addition to the incredible stature of Goliath, the Bible also provides detailed descriptions of all the armor and weapons he carried. In 1 Samuel 17:5-7, it is noted that Goliath was wearing a bronze helmet, a scale of armor, greaves, a javelin, and a shield. All of these weapons and armor together would have weighed over 100 pounds, making Goliath an even more formidable opponent.

Ultimately, the exact height of Goliath is unknown, but it is generally accepted that he was, at least, nine and a half feet tall. This would have made Goliath an impressive figure, even without taking into account the weapons and armor he was carrying. This can explain why David, who was significantly smaller than Goliath, was still able to defeat him using nothing more than a sling and a stone. No matter what the exact size of Goliath was, it is clear that his presence alone would have been intimidating.
