How Old Was Elijah When He Was Taken To Heaven?
The Hebrew prophet Elijah is renowned for his miraculous powers and his burial on the mountain of God. His life was remarkable and ended with an unusual and miraculous event that no other prophet experienced. The Bible tells us that Elijah was taken up to heaven at the age of eighty-two in the eleventh century BCE.
Although the Bible does not tell us Elijah’s exact age, we can make an educated guess based on the information that is provided. In 2 Kings 2:1-2, we learn that Elijah anointed Elisha to replace him and was taken away by a chariot of fire. This passage also tells us that Elijah had been a prophet of God for many years, likely more than a few decades.
We can also use the Bible to piece together information on Elijah’s age. In 1 Kings 17:1, the Bible tells us that Elijah had been a prophet for many years prior to his fateful journey to heaven. The Bible also establishes the fact that Elijah was a contemporary of the kings of Judah and Israel at that time, and that he was active for more than two decades (1 Kings 17:1).
Finally, we can use Biblical chronology to determine Elijah’s age. There were two kings at the time of Elijah’s departure: Joram of Israel and Ahaziah of Judah. According to the Biblical chronology, Ahaziah reigned from 841 to 815 BCE, and Joram reigned from 851 to 841 BCE. Using this information and the assumption that Elijah was the same age as his contemporaries, scholars usually place Elijah’s age at the time of his departure at somewhere between eighty and ninety.
In conclusion, while we cannot be certain of the exact age of Elijah when he was taken up to heaven, it is likely that he was around eighty-two years old. This age is supported by biblical passages, contemporary accounts, and Biblical chronology. Whether one is religious or not, Elijah’s remarkable story of power and divine ascension is awe inspiring and can be appreciated by all.
