How Many Gospels Are In The New Testament?

The New Testament is comprised of four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These Gospels are essential to understanding the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and make up the foundation of the Christian faith. Believed to be written by Jesus’ apostles, these four sacred texts introduce readers to the complex narrative of Jesus’ life.

Matthew’s Gospel is thought to have been composed around 70 AD and is the first book of the New Testament. It focuses on the life of Jesus, beginning with his lineage and birth. The book is filled with stirring parables, miracles, and teachings. It also contains the famous Sermon on the Mount, a collection of Jesus’ teaching that encapsulates his central message.

The Gospel of Mark is the second book of the New Testament, written around 80 AD. Mark’s Gospel is the shortest and is believed to have been written for the Gentiles, as it emphasizes Jesus’ physical works and ministry rather than his lineage. The book starts with Jesus’ baptism, takes readers through his ministry, and concludes with the Crucifixion and Resurrection.

Luke’s Gospel is the third book of the New Testament and was written around 70 AD. It is the longest Gospel and is often described as the most detailed account of Jesus’ life. Luke includes a number of parables and miracles, but also provides a unique look at the humanity of Jesus, such as his emotions and struggles. The Gospel includes many of Jesus’ most beloved parables, such as the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan.

John’s Gospel is the fourth book of the New Testament and was written around 90 AD. It is the most mystical and spiritual of the four Gospels and focuses more on the divine nature of Jesus than the others. John is often called the ‘Gospel of Love’, and contains many of Jesus’ famous “I am” sayings. The Gospel closes with the Resurrection of Jesus, and the promise of eternal life.

These four Gospels have been foundational to Christianity for centuries. Each one provides a unique lens into Jesus’ life and teachings, and together they serve as the roadmap to living a life of faith. From healing the sick to forgiving the sinner to facing death, the Gospels are the sacred doctrines that help believers to understand the Lord Jesus Christ and to grow in knowledge, understanding, and faith.
