Does Jehovah Witness Celebrate Mother’s Day?
For many people, Mother’s Day is a joyous occasion to celebrate and honor mothers everywhere. But for Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mother’s Day is treated differently.
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that honoring motherhood – as well as fatherhood and any other earthly relationship – should not be done on a day that is designated for such purpose. In other words, honoring one’s parents does not have to be exclusive to one day a year but should be practiced every day.
The primary doctrinal reasoning behind this is that celebrating holidays can lead to idolatry and other forms of religious and spiritual apostasy, thereby compromising one’s faith. This is why Jehovah’s Witnesses abstain from participating in the observance of any holidays, including Mother’s Day.
Although Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate Mother’s Day, their love for their mothers and other parental figures is still very strong. Instead of relying on holidays to express appreciation toward their parents, they express their appreciation through heartfelt words and genuine acts of kindness.
Jehovah’s Witnesses also believe in honoring one’s parents on an everyday basis in other ways. They may be demonstrating more responsibility around the home or in school by completing tasks with integrity and excellence. They may be more thoughtful in everyday conversations, respecting their parents’ wishes. They may be more generous in sharing appreciation and gratitude to their parents.
No matter how they do it, Jehovah’s Witnesses strive to honor their parents every day by following the Scriptural directive that “children should obey their parents in everything.” (Ephesians 6:1–3) This is their way of showing love for their parents on a regular basis, rather than just one day a year.
In summary, Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that it is better to show appreciation and honor to one’s parents every day, rather than in just one designated holiday. Thus, although they do not celebrate Mother’s Day, they still value and prioritize the importance of being respectful, kind and obedient to their mothers, as well as other parental figures, every single day.
