Do Jehovah’s Witnesses Celebrate Easter?
For many Christians, Easter is a significant holiday that symbolizes Jesus Christ’s resurrection and brings with it a renewed sense of hope and joy. But for Jehovah’s Witnesses, Easter is not celebrated in the same way. While Easter may be a day of joy for some, for Jehovah’s Witnesses it is not a day of celebration.
Jehovah’s Witnesses look to the Bible for guidance in their day-to-day living. In the Bible, there is no direct instruction to celebrate Easter, or any other religious holiday for that matter. Thus, many Jehovah’s Witnesses choose not to observe Easter.
Jehovah’s Witnesses take a literal approach to the Bible, and when searching through its pages, they find no support for a tradition of Easter celebration. Thus, they have chosen to abstain from the custom. When asked why they don’t celebrate, many Witnesses reply that the Bible does not advocate for it.
However, even if Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t observe Easter in a traditional sense, that doesn’t mean they don’t recognize the significance of Christ’s death and resurrection. In fact, many Witnesses find solace and encouragement in Jesus’ sacrifice.
Jehovah’s Witnesses view Jesus’ resurrection as a glorious moment, and recognize how it was a crucial part of God’s plan for our salvation. They look to this event for hope, and recognize that it brought about the reuniting of families in heaven.
In lieu of celebrating Easter, Jehovah’s Witnesses often participate in meaningful memorial services each year. These services serve as a reminder of the resurrection, and provide an opportunity to reflect on and ponder the impact Jesus’ death and resurrection had and continue to have on our lives.
While Easter may have a special place in the hearts of many, Jehovah’s Witnesses choose to focus their attention on the memorial service that serves to remind them of the significance of Jesus’ resurrection, rather than celebrate the holiday as it is traditionally done.
