What Are Bible Verses About Aversion?
Aversion is a strong dislike or strong feeling of distaste for something. This can manifest in various ways such as an avoidance of certain situations or an unwillingness to engage in activities that evoke the aversion; it can also manifest as an intense, uncontrollable fear or anxiety. The Bible speaks often of our attitudes towards the things of the world, including things we may find distasteful. The following is an essay that examines the Bible verses about aversion and how they can help us understand and respond to our feelings of aversion.
The Bible is filled with verses that can help us gain insight into our feelings of aversion and how to address them. Perhaps the most important verses on the subject come from the book of Proverbs. In Proverbs 3:7-8, we are told that “fearing the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” and that “it is the beginning of wisdom to hate evil.” The idea here is that if we strive to honor the Lord and reject evil, we will be better equipped to respond to the things we find off-putting in life.
We also find some wisdom on aversion in the book of Job. In Job 1:8, we see that Job was “perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.” This verse speaks to us of Job’s fear and avoidance of evil. He was willing to put distance between himself and anything that could lead him down the wrong path. In other words, he had an aversion to anything immoral and ungodly.
Romans 12:2 is also a very important verse to consider when examining our attitude towards things we are averse to. It states: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” This verse warns us that if we become too focused on the things of the world, we will be less likely to listen to God’s will for our lives. In other words, we should not be easily swayed by the things of the world that we are averse to, but rather seek to follow God’s will instead.
Finally, Philippians 4:8 gives us a great reminder to keep in mind when we are faced with things that we find distasteful. It tells us to “think on these things: whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report.” This verse speaks to us of the importance of focusing on the good instead of the bad, of looking for the light even in the darkness. It also reminds us to remember that God is in control, and His will should be our foremost concern when we are faced with things we are averse to.
In conclusion, the Bible offers us much wisdom when it comes to our attitudes towards the things of the world that we may find distasteful. By keeping the verses found in Proverbs, Job, Romans and Philippians in mind, we can better identify and respond to our feelings of aversion. Furthermore, we can be comforted by the fact that God is always in control, and He will lead us along the paths He has set for us.
