Are Satanists Atheist?
The question of whether or not Satanists are atheists can be answered by looking at the various beliefs and practices that are part of Satanism. While there are a number of different interpretations of Satanism, there appears to be no one single unified belief system. Generally, though, there are certain core tenets and concepts that are typically associated with Satanism.
At the core of Satanism is a rejection of the traditional concept of ‘ religion’ which is viewed as an oppressive system of control that subjugates the individual. This rejection of religion is generally expressed through a renunciation of the ‘God’ of the mainstream religions. Many Satanists, then, would identify as atheistic in terms of their belief in God.
However, some sects of Satanism have a more complex view of the concept of ‘God’. In particular, there is the belief in the existence of a dark divine entity known as ‘Satan’. This belief in a dark divine force of sorts differs from the traditional concept of God because it is seen as embodying freedom and self-expression rather than oppression and control.
The presence of a divine entity, however, does not necessarily mean that Satanists are not atheist. In some cases, the dark deity of Satan is seen simply as an archetypal figure or a metaphor for individualism and rebellion. It can be argued that, while Satanists may view this entity as divine, they in fact deny the existence of a greater universal God, which would make them atheistic.
Other Satanists may view their god, Satan, as existing only within their own metaphysical reality, and not within the real world. In this way, they may not be denying the existence of a greater universal God, but simply view Satan as a separate entity to the traditional God. In this case, it could be argued that Satanists may not necessarily be atheistic, but simply have a different view of what constitutes ‘God’.
Ultimately, it is difficult to definitively answer the question ‘Are Satanists Atheist?’ as there is no one unified belief system across the various sects of Satanism. However, it seems clear that, while some Satanists may view the entity of Satan as a divine one, they are generally seen to reject the existence of a greater universal God. As a result, it can be seen that, while there is some diversity of opinion, a majority of Satanists may be considered to be atheistic in terms of their belief in God.
