Are Jewish People Circumsized?

The Jewish tradition of circumcision, also known as brit milah, is an ancient religious and cultural practice that is still practiced today. The procedure, which is typically performed when an infant boy is 8 days old, involves removing the foreskin of the penis.

The practice of circumcision is believed to have originated with the Patriarchs of the Bible and can be traced back over 4000 years. It is seen as an outward sign of the covenant between God and the Jewish people, and the commandment to “be holy” and “set yourselves apart”.

Today, circumcision is still a strongly upheld practice among Jewish families of various denominations. It is believed to have spiritual and health benefits, as well as being a physical sign of Jewish identity.

The procedure is conducted by a mohel, which is an individual trained in the Jewish laws and traditions of circumcision. The mohel uses several special instruments and techniques to perform the circumcision in a humane and gentle way.

During the procedure, the mohel recites several blessings and prayers, and the infant is named in a ceremony known as a Brit Milah. As the Brit Milah is completed the baby’s father traditionally recites the Shehecheyanu blessing and passes the baby to a family member, who gives the baby a kiss.

Immediately after the circumcision, the baby is brought before the congregants, where he is blessed, given his Jewish name, and presented with gifts. Following the ceremony, the mother and infant typically make a festive meal to celebrate the new addition to the family.

Although the practice of circumcision has been a core part of Jewish identity since ancient times, it is not universally practiced. Many Jews have chosen to forgo circumcision, or have their sons circumcised in a non-traditional ceremony that is not connected to the Jewish faith.

No matter the approach, circumcision remains an important part of the Jewish tradition, and a powerful symbol of the unbreakable covenant between God and the Jewish people.
